Home Linking Technology Pros, Cons & Future
Home linking technology evolves to become fully wireless.

Home linking technology is used to connect devices in the home, and to connect the home to devices outside the home through networks like the Internet. Wireless technology is now widely used as a home linking technology, although there are non-wireless home linking technologies. Wireless technology is more commonly used as a home linking technology because it facilitates effective, efficient and timely data transfers. In wireless home linking, devices in the home are connected through such technologies as Bluetooth, WiFi, and others. These devices include laptops, printers, scanners and smartphones.

The popularity of wireless home linking technology means that most of the advantages and disadvantages of the technology are typically associated with wireless technology. In addition, the widespread use of wireless home linking technology gives insight on possible future conditions of the technology. Thus, for the purpose of this article, wireless home linking technology is evaluated.

Pros and Cons of Home Linking Technology

Ease of installation is one of the advantages of wireless home linking technology. Wireless home linking technology is easier to install than its wired counterpart because of the lack of wires and cables. In wired networks, wires and cables are used to connect devices. The installation of wired home linking technology takes considerable time because these wires and cables must be installed through conduits above the ceiling, under the floor or along the walls. In wireless home linking technology, wires and cables are not necessary, thereby having no need to install wires and cables for connectivity in the home. The installation of wireless home linking technology typically involves the installation of a wireless router.

In terms of total cost, wireless home linking technology can cost more than wired technology if the home is small. In small homes, the wireless network would still require the same wireless router used in bigger homes. As a result, wireless technology in small homes is more expensive per unit area of coverage. However, in large houses wireless technology is cheaper to install than wired technology. Wired home linking technology in a large house would require a lot of wires, cables and conduits, while wireless home linking technology in a large house would require the same wireless router used in the smaller house.

In terms of reliability, wireless home linking technologies are generally more reliable than wired home linking technologies in transmitting data among devices in the home. Wired technology has come a long way in terms of reliability of the technology. However, wired technology remains vulnerable to interference, such as electromagnetic interference on wires and cables. Because of the lack of wires, wireless home linking technologies are not as vulnerable to such interference.

In terms of security, currently popular wireless home linking technology is at a disadvantage. Wired home linking technology is more reliable than its wireless counterpart because a wireless home network can be accessed through a device even outside the home. This condition raises security issues, such as unauthorized access or use of the home network by someone outside the home. In wired home linking technology, access can only be done by physical connection, which makes wired networks less vulnerable to such unauthorized access.

The Future of Home Linking Technology

In the future, it is expectable that the security features of wireless home linking technology will keep improving. Compatibility among devices will continue to improve, thereby making it even more convenient to use wireless home linking technologies. It will be more convenient also because fewer wireless routers and other connecting devices will be needed in the home, as wireless technologies become more sophisticated. It is also expectable that more types of devices will be able to connect to wireless networks in the home, including household appliances with computer chips built in them. Wireless home linking technology will be a standard way of establishing connectivity in the home.
